75th Anniversary Scholarship Recipient: Katelyn Handler
As part of the celebration of ACRL’s 75th Anniversary, we’ve asked the ACRL 75th Anniversary scholarship recipients to describe the impact of attending the ACRL 2015 Conference on their professional life and/or their library.
Katelyn Handler is the Reference Instruction Librarian at Park University in Parkville, Missouri.
“Simply put, I don’t know that I would have been able to attend ACRL without the scholarship. I had attended ACRL once prior which had helped me understand what a wonderful conference it was; however, that year I had been able to share the cost of attending with others from my institution. It was also drivable for us, helping to defray the cost. ACRL 2015 was a different story. It was across the country, and I was new to my current institution. Without the scholarship to help defray costs, I’m not sure that I could have attended as funding was very tight for all faculty travel last year. I’m thankful that I did though, as the conference gave me the chance to talk to colleagues about some of the new challenges I was facing, and to do so in person. I find the chances to connect with peers at ACRL invaluable. I also had the chance to see wonderful speakers, some folks doing work that I greatly admire. I was very thankful that the scholarship afforded me the chance to have these experiences.”
