75th Anniversary Scholarship Recipient: Carissa Tomlinson
As part of the celebration of ACRL’s 75th Anniversary, we’ve asked the ACRL 75th Anniversary scholarship recipients to describe the impact of attending the ACRL 2015 Conference on their professional life and/or their library.
Carissa Tomlinson is the Coordinator of Student Engagement and Outreach and Liaison to Nursing, Women’s & Gender Studies, and Student Affairs at Towson University in Towson, Maryland.
“Attending the 2015 ACRL Conference made a huge difference in my professional life as well as my library. At the conference I was very excited to learn about a variety of library programs that focus on student leadership. Not only did these programs help me grow our Student Leadership Institute (http://cooklibrary.towson.edu/A-LIST/) to include a student-run library advisory board (which we’ll be implementing this year), it also inspired me to submit a book proposal about student leaders in the library. That book proposal has been accepted and we’re now working to recruit chapter authors who have implemented these programs. This book will help spread these ideas further into the academic library community. Without the scholarship that I received, it is unlikely that I would have been able to attend the conference. Our school, like many schools, has suffered from significant budget cuts and our travel funds are severely restricted. I truly appreciate the scholarship and believe that it has helped my career and my library grow!”
