75th Anniversary Scholarship Recipient: Nicole A. Thomas
As part of the celebration of ACRL’s 75th Anniversary, we’ve asked the ACRL 75th Anniversary scholarship recipients to describe the impact of attending the ACRL 2015 Conference on their professional life and/or their library.
Nicole A. Thomas is a student in the Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of Buffalo in New York.
“Attending the ACRL 2015 conference made a huge difference in my life and career. This was my first professional conference I have ever attended and it was a wonderful, memorable experience.
The first impact it had on me is that it boosted my self-confidence as a librarian. Meeting other early-career librarians helped to reassure me that I wasn’t the only one who felt a little unsteady at this point; the roundtable discussions particularly solidified this feeling of camaraderie. The poster sessions and lectures were very informative to me and I picked up some innovative ideas to use at my own libraries.
I appreciate all of the funding that went into providing scholarships for all of us recipients. Without the scholarship I would not have had an opportunity to visit Portland, which was an adventure to explore, connect with other librarians who are from an academic background and gain so much insight into what I can use to achieve success for myself and my library workplace.”
