1. What is the purpose of the Kick Start the Future Campaign? The fundraising campaign celebrates ACRL’s 75th anniversary by seeking to award scholarships to 75 more individuals to attend the ACRL 2015 Conference to be held March 25-28, 2015, in Portland, Oregon. ACRL leaders have been invited to ensure the vitality of the profession by raising $50,000 in additional scholarship funding. We seek to increase our capacity to build the skills and abilities of the next generation of academic and research librarians.

2. How much will be awarded in scholarship funding for the ACRL 2015 Conference? ACRL has budgeted $61,000 for 100 scholarships and seeks to raise $50,000 in order to fund an additional 75 scholarships.

3. What are the selection criteria for scholarship applicants?Specific criteria for the six scholarship categories can be found on the ACRL 2015 website. In all cases, preference will be given to:

  • Applicants from diverse cultural/ethnic backgrounds.
  • Applicants employed at institutions or in a position to serve, under-represented groups.
  • Applicants employed in an academic or research library.
  • Applicants who have not previously been awarded an ACRL scholarship.

4. How can I find out what other ACRL groups are doing to support the campaign? Our group hasn’t decided on a goal and it would be helpful to get some ideas. Steven Bell, ACRL 75th Anniversary Campaign Chair, will be contacting ACRL leaders regarding their fundraising project plans. A complete list will be published on the ACRL 75th Anniversary website under the “Fundraising” tab.

5. How can we track progress toward achieving our group goal? Progress toward group goals will be reported weekly. If your group has a participation goal, for example, we will publish the percentage of group members who have contributed and the amount raised. If your group has a dollar goal, we will publish the amount and percentage of goal raised.

6. Why does the 75th Anniversary Campaign end on December 31, 2014? The ACRL 2015 Conference Scholarships Committee will meet in January 2015 to make scholarship selections. The amount of funding received by the end of the year will determine how many additional scholarships can be awarded by the committee. As of July 23, 2014, we need to raise an additional $13,938 to reach our goal of 75 additional scholarships. If additional funds are raised, we can increase the number of scholarships and/or travel stipends.

7. Should division-level committees include fundraising plans in their annual work plans? Yes. Final drafts of work plans are due on Friday, August 8, 2014. If this is not in your draft work plan, and your group plans to raise funds, please include your project in your final version.

8. How much money do we need to raise to fund a named scholarship? $635.

9. Our group wants to raise funds for one or more named scholarships. Who is eligible to receive a named scholarship? Named scholarships will be awarded to librarians with less than six years of post-MLS experience to update their skills and knowledge. Scholarship applicants must be ACRL members and a member of your section or interest group and have less than six years of post-MLS professional library experience in a librarian role (excluding work study or student work) and currently employed in a library. Preference will be given to applicants employed in an academic or research library. Applicants must be recommended by their dean, director, or immediate supervisor. 10. Will there be ACRL 2015 scholarships for mid-career applicants? Based on suggestions heard at the ACRL Leadership Council meeting in Las Vegas, the ACRL Board of Directors approved funding for 25 mid-career librarian scholarships to provide opportunities for librarians with more than six and less than fifteen years of post-MLS experience to update their skills and knowledge by participating in an ACRL professional development experience. 11. What is the deadline for funding a named scholarship? Groups that wish to raise $635 (or multiples thereof) can establish a named scholarship. If you’d like progress reported on the ACRL fundraising web site for your named scholarship fundraising drive, please let us know of your intention to raise funds no later than September 30, 2014. Groups have until December 31, 2014 to achieve their target.

12. How will scholarship recipients be chosen for named scholarships? The ACRL 2015 Conference Scholarships Committee will review scholarship applications and select recipients. Section and interest group scholarships will be awarded by the Scholarship Committee to members of the respective groups. Division-level committee scholarships will be awarded to a deserving scholarship applicant. Chapter scholarships will be awarded to an ACRL member in the chapter region or state.

13. What happens if our group wants to fund a scholarship but falls short of our goal? You might consider inviting past section, committee, or chapter leaders to contribute to your campaign, but if your effort falls short, funds will go into the ACRL Friends Professional Development Fund pool and help to fund additional ACRL 2015 Conference scholarships. Your group will be recognized for contributing a specific amount to the campaign.

14. What happens if our group raises more than is needed for one full named scholarship, but not enough for a second scholarship? Your group will be recognized as having funded one full scholarship; the additional funds will go into the ACRL 75th Anniversary campaign pool and help to fund additional ACRL 2015 Conference scholarships. Your group will be recognized for funding one (or more) named scholarships and contributing additional funds to the 75th Anniversary campaign.

15. What will happen if ACRL raises more than $50,000 in scholarship funds? If the campaign raises more than $50,000, the ACRL 2015 Scholarships Committee will decide where there is the greatest need. Additional funds may be used to increase travel stipends and/or provide additional scholarships for the ACRL 2015 Conference.

16. Will ACRL increase the amount of the scholarship award? If the campaign raises more than $50,000, the additional funds may be used to increase travel stipends and/or provide additional scholarships for the ACRL 2015 Conference. This will not affect the amount required to fund a named scholarship.

17. Can my section use FY14 or FY15 Basic Services Funds to make a donation to the 75th Anniversary Campaign? The goal of the fundraising campaign is to raise additional funds from personal donations, so although sections can contribute Basic Services Funds to the campaign, we encourage sections to raise matching funds from section members.

18. How does a section chair make a Basic Services Fund donation? Section chairs can notify their staff liaison Megan Griffin at mgriffin@ala.org or 312-280-2514.

19. How do I donate so that my contribution is counted towards my committee, section, interest group, or chapter goal? There are three ways to make sure your donation is counted towards a group goal – online donations, payments by check, and pledges. Visit the How Do I Donate page for detailed instructions for giving to the campaign.

20. How will individual donors be recognized? All donors to the 75th Anniversary campaign will be recognized on the fundraising section of the 75th Anniversary web site. The 75th anniversary campaign pages will recognize donors who have made a formal pledge or donation. 75th Anniversary campaign donors are also recognized on the ACRL Friends website on the 2014 honor wall.

Donors will also receive additional recognition and acknowledgement as noted below:

  • 75th Anniversary Scholarship Supporters: Donors who give less than $75 will receive a Scholarship Supporter ribbon.
  • Kick Starter Club: Donors who give $75-$299 receive a Kick Starter Club ribbon, and reserved seating at the ACRL 2015 keynote presentations. Donors will also be invited to our special 75th Anniversary celebration reception in March 2015 in Portland.
  • ACRL 75: With a gift of $300-749 by December 31, 2014, donors will be receive an ACRL 75 ribbon, reserved seating at the ACRL 2015 keynote presentations, and a donor profile on the ACRL 75th Anniversary website. Donors will also be invited to our special 75th Anniversary celebration reception in March 2015 in Portland.
  • Presidents’ Circle 75: With a gift of $750-$999 by December 31, 2014, donors will be invited to our special 75th Anniversary celebration reception in March 2015 in Portland. Donors also receive an ACRL President’s Circle 75 ribbon, reserved seating at the 2015 keynote presentations, and a donor profile on the ACRL 75th Anniversary website.
  • Phineas L. Windsor Honor Circle: With a gift of $1,000 or more, donors and their guests will be invited to the Scholarship Breakfast on March 26, and our special 75th Anniversary celebration reception in March 2015 in Portland. Donors also receive the Phineas L. Windsor Honor Circle Ribbon, reserved seating at the 2015 keynote presentations, and a donor profile on the ACRL 75th Anniversary website.

21. Will individual donors to a group goal be recognized? Yes,we will recognize individual donors who contribute to group goals on the ACRL 75th Anniversary fundraising website.

22. How will donors be thanked? Is there a stewardship process? All donors receive formal thank-you letters from the ALA Executive Director, the ACRL Executive Director, and a handwritten note from the ACRL Board of Directors.

Group leaders will be notified when members have made contributions toward group goals and will receive contact information so that the leader can make a personal phone call or send an email.
