Diversity Resident Position – University of North Carolina Greensboro
Position Description No. 3130 – Diversity Resident 2012-2014
The University Libraries have established a two-year Post MLS Diversity Residency program to further increase the diversity of our professional staff while fostering the growth and development of a new librarian. The purpose of the Residency program is to attract a recent graduate to the challenging and rewarding career of academic librarianship. University Libraries has a Diversity Committee and also participates in the University’s diversity initiatives.
In the first year, the Resident will work in three functional areas to be determined mutually by the Resident’s interests and the needs of the Libraries. In the second year, the Resident will develop specialized expertise by focusing on one service area. Residents will provide service and gain valuable experience in multiple facets of academic librarianship through this process.
The Resident will have an opportunity to serve in the liaison role for an appropriate area of expertise. As liaison, the Resident will explore opportunities and make recommendations for increasing library outreach efforts, library instruction, collection development and accessing resources. The Resident will serve on library committees as appropriate, including the Diversity Committee and search committees.
Professional development is a strong component of the Residency program. The Resident will participate in career planning and vita preparation workshops. The Resident will be encouraged to deliver presentations, attend national and regional conferences, and/or write for professional publications. Financial support for professional development opportunities will be available. The Resident will also participate in the Libraries mentoring program that matches untenured librarians with tenured mentors. The Resident will be highly encouraged to collaborate and network with UNCG’s Library and Information Studies department.
The University Libraries:
The University Libraries support the learning and research missions of the University through its print and electronic resources, reference and instructional services, and other outreach programs. With a budget of $9 million, the collections include 1.2 million volumes, more than 62,000 electronic and print journal subscriptions, over 600 electronic databases, and over 600,000 federal government documents.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary is $42,000 per year and is a two-year visiting faculty non-tenure track position with a flexible start date of beginning in July or August, 2012. The Resident will receive support for professional development activities. It is expected that the Resident will not be employed outside of the university or receive additional fellowships or awards during the Residency period unless approved by the University. Benefits include: 24 days’ vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options. · ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, awarded no later than August, 2012.
· Strong interest in the pursuit of a career in academic librarianship
· Experience working with culturally diverse populations
· General knowledge of traditional and electronic information resources and experience in developing web pages
· Ability to work in a team environment; an interest in professional development and research
· Excellent oral and written communications skills.
· Ability to work successfully in a collegial environment.
· Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity and to serving underrepresented populations.
· Evidence of interest in lifelong learning and in contributing to the profession through research projects and scholarly communication.
· Enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
· A tolerance for flexibility in work styles is highly desired; this is a program that is designed around an employee being exposed to several departments within the library in a short time span.
· MLS received within the last two years.
