South College Library is creating an asynchronous online library orientation course where we will apply the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to meet the needs of progressively ubiquitous online learning environments – particularly for students who may never have another opportunity for basic information literacy instruction.

About the Presenters

Jennifer Castle is the Instruction Librarian at South College Nashville. Her research interests include information literacy and instruction efficacy. She graduated from the SJSU iSchool where she was Chair of the Society of American Archivists student chapter. She holds a BA in visual communication from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Jon Hudson is an Instruction Librarian with the South College Library and is based in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated in 2016 with his M.L.I.S. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s School of Information Science. When he isn’t at work, he loves listening to podcasts and playing Dungeons & Dragons.


  1. This is very comprehensive! I love the idea of building orientation materials around the Framework.

    How do students become “enrolled” in this class? Are they only accessing the materials if the instructors put it in their class or can they access the orientation class independently? Do you have numbers on student usage?

    • Hi Elizabeth, thank you for your questions!

      Our Instructional Technology department enrolls students in the course at the same time they are enrolled in their other courses on Canvas. Students will remain enrolled in the orientation course throughout their stay at South College. The same goes for all teaching faculty. This will stay the same across both versions of the online orientation course.

      Since students will be enrolled in the course, they can access the entire course independently or at their instructor’s direction. The goal is for this to stay the same with version 2.0 and we are hoping that more instructors will decide to pull modules into their courses.

      As for student usage, the quiz functionality in Canvas will allow us to determine student completion of each module. Canvas also offers an analytics feature that allows us to see the number of page views and actions taken per day. The current online orientation sees about 30,000 page views the first week of each quarter (we do quarters rather than semesters at South).

      • I really like the idea of having students automatically enrolled in a course where librarians are able to continually update and maintain content easily. We’ve been doing embedded instruction for years and have found that embedding learning modules directly in a course is increasingly hard to maintain over time and even more difficult to track. I would think that having a centralized area where students can be directed would be great—though, not exactly course-specific, which is a bit of a con.

        With instructors pulling items into their course how do you track, update, and maintain them? Is there an approval process for when instructors pull modules? We use Blackboard—so excuse me if this question is obvious.

        • We’ve been very tentatively exploring the concept of embedded librarianship at our institution, although there has been push-back and we are working to come up with a feasible workaround for it.

          These are great questions, Elizabeth. As is stated in the poster, we are still learning what Canvas is capable of and to be perfectly honest, I had to reach out to our Instructional Technology team to get the full answer for this. The way our course is currently set up, in order share content with our teaching faculty, we publish the content to Canvas Commons, which is a shared space where anyone who creates canvas content can pull from. Unfortunately, there isn’t currently a way to track, update, maintain, or any sort of approval process for the content that gets pulled into other courses. The sharing/pulling content aspect of this is something we are still learning about with Canvas, so this is subject to change.

  2. HI Jennifer and John-

    Thanks for showing how you developed instructional activities for each of the Frames. I like that you included information about the lesson plan and assessment for each Frame.

    If students are finding these because instructors point them to it, how do you market to the instructors? Instructors can understand me helping students “search the databases”, but they might not understand me helping the students develop “dispositions of Research as Inquiry”?

    • Hi Jenni,

      These are excellent questions! Once we get the course far enough along that we can start showing it to people, the plan is to start inviting select faculty members into the course to get their feedback and to start generating word-of-mouth about the course within their various departments.

      When it’s finally time to launch the course, we will have an announcement about the course posted to South College’s faculty and staff intranet. We will also send out emails notifying each department of the update, with direct emails to the teaching faculty in our General Studies department who we know have the current online library orientation as part of their syllabus.

      That being said, these are just our initial thoughts on how to spread the word. We are open to other marketing strategies if you have any suggestions!
