Library Instruction Courses Offered by Accredited Master’s Programs in Library and Information Studies

PURPOSE: The Professional Education committee encourages the development of professional education for library school students and librarians with instruction-related responsibilities. This page serves as a resource for collecting course descriptions and sample syllabi (when freely available online) of library instruction courses currently offered at ALA-Accredited Library Schools.

Please note: this document has been retired by the Section and is no longer updated.

SCOPE: During the fall of 2005 committee members visited the web sites of ALA-Accredited Library Schools and searched the course catalogs and descriptions for instruction-related courses. We looked for course titles containing the terms “information literacy,” “user education,” “bibliographic instruction,” and any variation of “instruction.” In addition, we read course descriptions and listed courses that provide other training for teachers, such as instructional design or teaching with technology. This content has been updated annually since then; most recently in the summer of 2014.

This page contains only full courses devoted to instruction; it does not include courses where instruction is one section of the course, such as a basic reference course. While the Instruction Section focuses on the professional development of academic librarians, library school courses on the teaching role of school librarians may be beneficial for academic librarians. These courses are marked below. Please note: the school librarian courses listed are ones offered at ALA-accredited Master’s programs in library and information studies; it does not include courses at AASL NCATE-approved school library media education programs.

This resource was curated and updated by the Professional Education Committee, which was reformed into the Information Gathering and Exchange Committee in 2016 and the bibliography was retired in 2016. While this wiki is no longer updated annually, if you have an update you would like added, please contact the current Instruction Section Chair at ACRLInstruction@gmail.com.
