Executive Committee
Charge: To provide direction for the attainment of the objectives of the Section. The Executive Committee has authority over the affairs of the Section during the period between meetings of the Section, subject to review by the members at a meeting of the Section.

The Executive Committee members are the eight elected officers of the Section: Chair, Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect, Secretary, Past Chair, and four Members-at-Large. The entire IS membership has the opportunity to vote for the officers as part of the general ALA election each spring. Executive Committee terms begin immediately after the Annual Conference.
Helpful Information
- Executive Committee Officers have an extensive list of responsibilities, including serving as liaisons to each of the IS committees and task forces.
- Committee appointments are handled by the Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect. Each year IS members may volunteer by February 15 for a standing committee appointment; appointments are made in the spring; and terms begin after the ALA Annual Conference. The Appointment Cycle Reports detail the demographics of current IS committee members.
- IS members can submit nominations for IS Officers at any point during the year.
- IS Publication Proposal Archive, Tips for Managing Publication Proposals, Requirements for IS Web Bibliographies, and Tips for Updating the “Annotated Bibliography of Publications By or About the Instruction Section.”

Advisory Council
Charge: To provide a forum for reporting, discussing, and coordinating the work of Instruction Section’s committees and task forces. The Advisory Council is composed of the Executive Committee, plus all the chairs and vice-chairs of the standing committees and task forces, and ex officio members including the IS Committee List Administrator, the IS Web Administrator(s), the IS Newsletter Editor, the IS Archivist, the IS liaison to the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), and the director of the Library Orientation & Exchange Clearinghouse (LOEX).
Meetings: The Advisory Council meets at both ALA Midwinter and Annual Conference. Typically, Advisory Council meetings are scheduled prior to and following the meetings of the Section’s committees and task forces. The Secretary of the Section records the minutes at the Advisory Council meetings. Visitors are welcome to attend the meetings. Check the full schedule of IS meetings which is posted about one month before each conference.

- All members of the Advisory Board have specific responsibilities that are dependent on their role or committee assignment.
- Committee appointments are made by the Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of the Instruction Section. IS members are encouraged to submit a Committee Volunteer Form by February 15 if they wish to serve on a committee or task force. Most appointments are made in the spring with the term of service beginning immediately following the ALA Annual Conference in the summer.
