75th Anniversary Scholarship Recipient: Suzanne Bernsten

As part of the celebration of ACRL’s 75th Anniversary, we’ve asked the ACRL 75th Anniversary scholarship recipients to describe the impact of attending the ACRL 2015 Conference on their professional life and/or their library.

Suzanne Bernsten is the Web Services Librarian and Liaison to English, ESOL, Speech, Developmental Writing, and eLearning at Lansing Community College LibraryBernsten, Suzanne in Lansing, Michigan.

“Attending ACRL was an amazing experience! I would not have been possible for me to attend without a scholarship. The wide variety of topics and formats, and the librarians from such a wide range of institutions at ACRL made the conference incredible. At my community college, I coordinate the library website, as well as participate in reference, instruction, and collection development. I was able to attend sessions which gave me new ideas I could apply to all of my different job responsibilities.

I participated in a workshop on creating a culture of assessment that has helped me prepare for my sabbatical this spring. I also attended a workshop on threshold concepts which gave me lots of practical ideas for library instruction. I led a roundtable discussion and had the opportunity to share what I have learned about creating and maintaining web content, as well as to network with librarians at other institutions facing the same challenges. Back at my institution, I shared what I learned with colleagues across the library and led a discussion at a department meeting about how our library could support high impact educational practices. Thank you so much for the scholarship to attend ACRL.”
