Meet the ACRL Presidents: Ralph Eugene Ellsworth

Ralph Eugene EllsworthOver the course of ACRL’s 75th anniversary celebration, we’ll highlight the association’s history by profiling our past presidents.

Ralph Eugene Ellsworth (1907-2000) was the 14th and 24th president of ACRL, serving from 1951-52 and again from 1961-62. Ellsworth is the only person to have served two terms as ACRL president. During that time, he was also the director of libraries at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Under his leadership as the 14th president, it was decided that the 85 gift subscriptions of College and Research Libraries to foreign libraries would be continued indefinitely as a contribution to international good will. A life member of ALA, Ralph also served on the Executive Board from 1946-50 and chaired the Seventy-fifth Anniversary Celebration Committee in 1951. His book publications include Planning the College and University Library Building (1960, 1968), Academic Library Buildings: A Guide to Architectural Issues and Solutions (1973), and The Economics of Book Storage in College and University Libraries (1969).
