Meet the ACRL Presidents: Archie L. McNeal

Over the course of ACRL’s 75th anniversary celebration, we’ll highlight the association’s history by profiling our past presidents.

Archie L. McNeal (1912-1999) was the 27th president of ACRL, serving from 1964-1965. During that time, he was also the Director of Libraries at the University of Miami. Under his leadership, the University of Miami completed a new central library and greatly expanded its collections, specifically in the areas of Latin American and Slavic studies. During the 1960’s, McNeal hired several exiled Cuban librarians who began collecting Cuban books, periodicals, posters, pictures, and other materials about the culture and history of Cuba and Cubans in the Miami area. In addition to serving as the president of ACRL, Archie was also president of the Florida Library Association, LLAMA and held numerous other leadership roles in ALA. He received recognition and honors for his distinguished career, including being selected as a 1993 Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Memphis.
