ACRL Member of the Week: Erica Ann Watson

Editor’s note: April is Community College Month, and all month we are featuring community college librarians as the ACRL Member of the Week to celebrate!

Erica Ann Watson is an electronic services librarian at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, CA. Erica has been a member of ACRL for 9 years and is your ACRL Member of the Week for April 11, 2022.

Describe yourself in three words: DIY- do it yourself.

What are you reading (or listening to on your mobile device)? I am reading Crying in the H Mart by Michelle Zauner, Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, and The Bird Way by Jennifer Ackerman.

Describe ACRL in three words: Relevant, educational, relatable.

What do you value about ACRL? When I first started working in the field, I was a solo librarian. ACRL kept me from feeling isolated. Their webinars and courses kept me informed, and the opportunity to participate on committees kept me directly engaged in my new profession.

What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus? Oh, boy! What a question. I manage the databases – ensuring that the materials represent our student population and are relevant to the disciplines we have on campus – facilitate the technology loan program, and participate in shared governance by serving on the Academic Senate and Distance Education and Guided Pathways committees. I am also collaborating with a colleague to create a digital literacy course, teaching workshops, making videos for instructors… so many things.

In your own words: Not to sound corny, but being a librarian is the bee’s knees. When I decided to change careers to academia, I did not think I would end up a librarian at a community college. I couldn’t be happier with where my path took me. I am glad to be part of a super team that shares my enthusiasm to be an advocate for students and make their academic experience positive
