ACRL Member of the Week: Luz Badillo

Luz Badillo is the Instruction & Reference Librarian at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, CA. Luz has been a member of ACRL for 2 years and is your ACRL Member of the Week for July 17, 2023.

Describe yourself in three words: Creative, funny, honest.

What are you reading (or listening to on your mobile device)? I am currently reading Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner.

Describe ACRL in three words: Engaging, informative, thought-provoking.

What do you value about ACRL? Scholarship opportunities! I was a part of the ACRL 2023 Scholarships Committee and I loved that we were able to offer scholarships for both in-person and virtual attendance to the ACRL 2023 Conference.

What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus? I primarily work with students and faculty to meet their information needs. When I’m not providing instruction and reference services, I can be found working on LibGuides, learning more about Zines, or brainstorming new book display and programming ideas with my colleagues.

In your own words: My favorite thing about being an academic librarian is the opportunity to support and learn from first-year, first-generation, and prospective transfer students of color. Their experiences and ideas add so much value to the world of academia. I really enjoy learning from them to better inform the work that I do.
