ALA Sympa Email List Server

Editor’s Note: The following message is from Sherri Vanyek of ALA’s ITTS department regarding the association’s email lists. If you subscribe to any ALA or ACRL email lists through Sympa, please review.

I am writing to let you know that over the last couple of days we have determined that ALA‘s Sympa list server has been the object of a successful spam attack. What this means is that some individual subscribers have been blocked by our spam service. We do not have the information about who has been blocked but we know that some messages may be distributed to lists, some individuals will not receive them, and some individuals may be blocked from sending messages.

After examining options, a determination was made that the best solution was the installation of a newer version of the Sympa software. This installation, which is already underway, involves the testing and installation of a new operating system and working with our spam service to unblock individual users. At this point we are estimating that the installation should be completed by the end of the week and that the spam service should have individuals unblocked no later than early next week. Once the installation is completed and users unblocked, users will have access to all the lists and archives as before.

We will be sending you updated information as the installation progresses and is completed.
