Call for Applications and Nominations for ACRL Publications in Librarianship (PIL) Editor

ACRL is currently accepting applications, and nominations are invited, for editor of Publications in Librarianship (PIL), an imprint of ACRL book publications.

The PIL editor works closely with the ACRL Content Strategist and PIL editorial board to acquire and develop appropriate research-based books. The editor is appointed for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2024, which may be renewed for an additional three years. Applicants must be a member of ALA and ACRL at the time of appointment. Candidates are expected to uphold and advance the association’s core commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and contribute to the editorial board’s review of all book proposals, typically 5 to 10 per year
  • Oversee and contribute to peer review for each PIL manuscript, both traditional closed review by the board and open peer reviews (decided on a per-project basis), 1 to 3 per year
  • Schedule and lead editorial board meetings twice per year

Estimated Time Commitment

  • 4 to 8 hours per month, though the amount of work varies according to current projects


  • Professional experience in academic libraries
  • A record of scholarly publication
  • A willingness to proactively seek content and proposals
  • Effective communication skills
  • Experience working with a group
  • A broad knowledge of the issues confronting academic libraries
  • Editing experience (preferred)
  • An awareness of the legal and ethical aspects of research, scholarly publishing, and the publishing process (preferred)

Appointment will be made by the ACRL Board of Directors at the 2024 ALA Annual Conference upon the recommendation of the search committee and the ACRL Publications Coordinating Committee.
