Welcome to ACRL Insider, ACRL’s newest blog! This blog is designed to keep you informed on the activities, services, programs, and governance of ACRL. Here you will find out about ACRL publications, events, conferences, e-Learning opportunities, podcasts, etc. and gain some insight into the governance of ACRL.
With the launch of this new communication tool, ACRL hopes to foster openness and transparency by providing an outlet for connection between members and the Board and staff. To encourage a collaborative environment, all ACRL Insider posts allow for reader comments and suggestions. We are pleased to add another opportunity to dialogue with members and others interested in the business of ACRL. I encourage academic and research librarians to subscribe to ACRL Insider and to share your responses to our posts.
As we prepare for the Midwinter Meeting, I wanted to alert you to some of the topics that will be discussed in a number of venues and meetings.
1. At its Tuesday meeting next week, the ACRL Board will take its second vote on whether to put changes to the bylaws on the spring ballot for membership approval. If the Board approves placing these changes on the ballot, and if the members approve them, ACRL would offer a new forum for member involvement–interest groups. Research with members has told us that members want more opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Typical comments included, ““I really couldn’t find a primary section that pertains to what I do.” The creation of interest groups would help ACRL be more nimble in responding to members’ interests. Details about these proposals may be found in ACRL Board documents 11.3a* and 11.3b* .
2. ALA Council will be discussing a proposal to require that all of ALA’s electronic listservs be available as read only for members. ACRL Board members have been discussing this for the past several weeks and have created a talking points document for the ACRL Councilor. The Board will continue to add both pros and cons throughout Midwinter and I will continue to share information with you as it becomes available. The resolution and a snapshot of the comments made to date may be found in ACRL Board document 24.2*.
We look forward to engaging in conversation with you about ACRL.
