As before, cases with a choice of authorized forms under the new rules are highlighted with the Duden “recommendation” (“Variantenempfehlungen“) in yellow. While definitions are not given (that is not the purpose of this dictionary), there are almost always examples of usage for the entries, and the gender of nouns and irregular verb formation are given; there are numerous “Infokasten” clarifying complex cases, and there is an extensive introductory section devoted to a discussion of the orthographic reform. The accompanying CD-ROM provides automated guidance and Rechtschreibung to Word documents as you create them. CD-ROM not tested by this reviewer. RLK
Beethoven Handbuch / herausgegeben von Sven Hiemke. Kassel: Bärenreiter; Stuttgart: Metzler, 2009. 628 pp. ISBN 9783761820209 (Bärenreiter), 9783476021533 (Metzler): € 76. Indexes of works and of persons complete the volume. RLK
E.T.A. Hoffmann: Leben, Werk, Wirkung / herausgegeben von Detlef Kremer. Berlin; New York: De Gruyter, 2009. 666 p., music. ISBN 9783110183825: € 159.95. A comprehensive overview of the multi-talented and influential figure from the Romantic period. An opening biographical section is followed by one focusing on the various facets of the Romantic Weltanschauung. Hoffmann’s literary works are treated in the main portion of the handbook, with an article devoted to each that includes information on its genesis as well as one or more salient themes or facets. Hoffmann’s musical compositions receives a separate section, as does his contributions in the legal sphere. A section comprised of an interpretation of twenty-six discrete thematic Hoffmannian motifs (e.g. Automaten, Wahnsinn) provides an interesting thematic perspective. Discussion of Hoffmann’s historical literary reception, his impact on film and post-war literature, and a report on Hoffmann research complete the essay sections of this volume. A thiry-nine page bibliography and an index are provided. This is certainly a necessary title on the Hoffmann shelves. RLK

Marburger Personalschriften-Forschungen, Bd. 46. Stuttgart: Franz Steiner Velag, 2008. 216 p. ISBN 9783515092913 (pbk.): € 34.00. Containing 434 entries for funeral sermons and funereal writings, this title in the series follows the same format as its predecessors: entries are alphabetical by name of the deceased and contain succinct information about the subject, the author of the sermon or writing, and the location of the holding library. A rich variety of indexes unlocks the content through variously categorized personal names, publishers, places and occupations. RLK
Deutsche Literatur auf einem Blick: 400 Werke aus 1200 Jahren: ein Kanon / Ralf Georg Bogner, Hg. Darmstadt: Primus-Verlag, 2009. 384 p. ISBN 9783896786630: € 29.90. The word “Kanon” in the title immediately raises the level of reader interest, if only to gauge how closely the editor’s choice matches the reader’s. Leaving that contentious element aside, however, we find here signed, chronologically ordered articles devoted to individual works, which results in the non-continguous presentation of an author’s works. Each article follows a set, identified outline covering these elements: publishing/performing history, genre, content/themes/literary construction, biography, context within the author’s work, historical context, reception, edition source. A combined person and work index is provided. RLK
