Donnachie, Ian L. Collins dictionary of Scottish history. Glasgow : HarperCollins, 2001. 384 p.; 24 cm. ISBN 0007121857. 20 GBP

  • The devolution of Scottish government as well as a cultural revival has spurred intense interest in Scottish history. This dictionary, one of several works created to meet the need for reliable reference works, provides ready access to the nation’s history through brief factual entries. Advertised as an “inclusive guide to major and minor events and personalities . . . since the 10th century,” it also takes up key themes, topics, and debates. Major entries include bibliography. Appendices include maps, population statistics, lists of political figures, genealogies, weights and measures, etc. SFR

The Oxford companion to Scottish history. Lynch, Michael, ed. Oxford; New York: Oxford University Press, 2001. 732 p.; 24cm. ISBN 0192116967. 30 GBP

  • A product of the recent cultural renaissance in Scotland, the companion focuses on the Scottish people and the forces and factors that affected their lives across the centuries. Many experts contributed to this effort, which does not claim comprehensiveness as a biographical or historical dictionary. Rather the entries are structured by seventeen broad themes that are laid out in a Classified Contents at the beginning. These include government and administration, economic life, physical environment, culture, historians, and links to the outside world. The apparatus is excellent, containing a glossary, chronology, maps and genealogies; an extensive and classified Guide to further reading follows the structure of the classified contents with historiographical and factual annotations for most major sections. Despite the obvious scholarly authority behind it, the companion aims to be accessible. Indeed, browsing in it is fascinating and rewarding. The Preface promises the origin of the term “steamin’ drunk,” but it is not easy to find. SFR

Boyrie-Fénié, Benedicte and Jean-Jacques Fénié. Dictionnaire des pays et provinces de France. References. Bordeaux : Sud Ouest, 2000. 349 p.; 24 cm. ISBN 2879013674. 120 FF

  • Recent administrative changes, shifting economic and demographic realities, and new Europe-centered internationalism, as well as the declining emphasis on geography and history in education, have diminished awareness of the original historical, geographical, and linguistic nature of many French localities. In response to this loss of memory, the authors of this brief survey aim to summarize the fundamental identity of 546 French pays drawn from the 300 basic divisions of Gaul and the entities resulting from subsequent divisions in the Carolingian era and later into counties, ecclesiastical dioceses, provinces, and gouvernements. Following an Introduction comprising a history of the word and concept of pays, each one is described according to these categories: department(s), region, principal communes, principal rivers, Gallo-Roman city, diocese, Ancien Régime province, ancient forms of the name with dates, etymology, linguistic region, spelling in the original linguistic zone, and a brief geographical and historical description. The entries are complemented by a general index and a bibliography.SFR

  • This is the third edition of a directory that has appeared at decennial intervals beginning in 1983. The number of individuals listed here has doubled since the last edition in 1991 and represent the interdisciplinary field that history has become: historians of art, literature, the environment, science and technology are included. The work thus faithfully reflects current historical research in France, in its research institutions and universities as well as among the unaffiliated and the retired. Entries list title, personal address, telephone, email, institutional affiliation, research in progress, theses and publications. The thematic and geographical indexes are useful for enabling contacts between researchers in similar fields. SFR

German

Biographische Enzyklopädie deutschsprachiger Philosophen / bearbeitet von Bruno Jahn. München: Saur, 2001. 718 pp. ISBN 3598114303. 110 Euros.

  • Based on the Deutsche biographische Enzyklopädie (Killy & Vierhaus, 1995-2000), this is essentially an extract of its articles on philosophers, updated (in the case of unsigned articles) and with 170 additional entries, bringing the total to 1,540. Restricted to deceased individuals within the German-speaking countries and regions, from the early Middle Ages to the present. Includes persons whose scholarly contributions were either entirely or partly in philosophy in the broad definition of the word. Thus, for example, there is an entry for Schiller because of his contributions in philosophy; there are entries for theologians, psychologists and scientists as well when their thought embodies a “philosophical dimension” (although admittedly this remains a subjective assessment). Each article provides an overview of the entrant’s life and works and includes a primary and secondary bibliography. Includes a chronological table of persons by birth-death dates, an alphabetical name index including dates, an index of place names referencing persons, and a chronological index of work titles. RLK

Chronologisches Wörterbuch des deutschen Wortschatzes. 8. Jahrhundert / bearbeitet von Elmar Seebold; unter Mitarbeit von Brigitte Bulitta … et al.. Berlin; New York: de Gruyter, 2001. 532 pp. ISBN 3110169622.

  • The first in a planned series of historical dictionaries of German, this volume concentrates on the beginnings of written German in the last quarter of the 8th century. It is divided into four main sections: introduction; history of texts, textual annotations/glossaries, lexicography, and utilization of vernacular words within Latin texts; the main dictionary section arranged alphabetically by word families, and a small dictionary of vernacular “infusion” terms, including source references; and a dictionary of New High German words and word stems whose origin can be traced back to the 8th century or earlier, divided into an alphabetic section and a chronological/alphabetical section. A six-page bibliography of cited works concludes the volume. RLK

  • Voluminous overview of the conceptual, historical, cultural and applied aspects and elements of the German language and German language pedagogy for foreign speakers within an international, comparative context. In-depth, signed articles contributed by 171 scholars include substantial bibliographies. Name and topical indexes conclude vol. 2. RLK

Encyclopedia of German Literature. Edited by Matthias Konzett. Chicago: Fitzroy Dearborn, 2000. 2 vols. (1136 pp.). ISBN 1579581382. $175.00

  • A welcome addition to the slim reference shelf of German literary bio-bibliographic works in English. The alphabetically arranged work contains articles contributed by scholars on German writers, on works (following and subsumed under authors) and on topics. The articles are substantive and include primary and secondary bibliographies. There are alphabetical lists of entries and of works, and general and title indexes. RLK

Grundmann, Hilmar. Deutsche Literaturgeschichte für Lehrer. Stuttgarter Arbeiten zur Germanistik, Nr. 394. Stuttgart: Verlag Hans-Dieter Heinz, 2001. 655 pp. ISBN 3880993998.

  • To the anticipated question of why a “special” literary history for teachers is needed, Grundmann answers that while it has not been done nor particularly needed in the past, it is now needed and will be increasingly in the future. There are several reasons for this, according to the author: shrinking educational budgets and the newer emphasis on “communicative competencies” at the expense of literary education have reduced the availability of secondary-level literary histories and the time spent on them; beyond this, the accelerating speed and “disconnectedness” of contemporary society has led to an ever increasing inability of the student to grasp the whole, to gain perspective on the past and present in a cultural context. Grundmann’s book could as well have been named “for students (pupils) of the pre-Oberstufe level;” it includes selective texts and chronological tables as well as cohesive literary history which consciously seeks to connect literature with social and intellectual developments, and which is aimed not only at pre-Gymnasium but also pre-technical students. Surely the application of Grundmann’s book goes beyond this segment of readers to many others as well. RLK

Kürschners deutscher Sachbuch-Kalender. 1. Jahrgang, 2001-2002. Redaktion, Andreas Klimt. München: Saur, 2002. 663 pp. ISBN 3598241801. 210 Euros.

  • This new publication fills the gap between Kürschners deutscher Gelehrten-Kalender and Kürschners deutscher Literatur-Kalender. While the former covers the professional/scientific field and the latter the world of belles lettres, this new member of the Kalender family provides coverage of popular or popular-scientific non-fiction produced exclusively by living, German-speaking authors. The main portion is comprised of bio-bibliographical entries for 4,013 authors containing the individual’s profession, address, biographical data, memberships, awards, publications and secondary literature. The appendix includes a calendar of selected birthdays of authors for the years 2002-2006, a detailed alphabetic directory of 742 non-fiction publishers represented, an index of authors broken down into occupational/topical categories followed by an index of the publishers by the same categories, an index of the authors by postal codes within countries, and a reference index of cities to postal codes. A well-done almanac. RLK

Kussmaul, Ingrid. Die Nachlässe und Sammlungen des Deutschen Literaturarchivs Marbach. Deutsches Literaturarchiv: Verzeichnisse, Berichte, Informationen, Bd. 23. Marbach am Neckar: Deutsche Schillergesellschaft, 1999. 2 vols., facsims. ISBN 3929146851.

  • When the Deutsches Literaturarchiv was founded in 1955, its manuscript division oversaw 150 estates and collections. At the time of the publication of Kussmaul’s first description of the archive in 1983, this number had grown to 570. As of Dec. 31, 1997, the archive was steward of 1,016 and continues to expand. The present work cumulates and updates the entries from 1983, providing a selective picture through 1997 of the most important of these estate collections of writers, Germanists and philosophers, and of archives of publishers, newspapers, editorial offices, literary institutions and other discrete collections. Vol. 1 arranges the collection descriptions alphabetically by individual or archive name. Each article provides a quantitative and genre-analytical overview, including names of correspondents, and occasional manuscript page facsimiles. Vol. 2 is an index to vol. 1 by personal and corporate names, including correspondent names. A valuable reference work RLK

  • Provides a welcome collocating reference work for German children’s literature published in exile, which up to now had been only partially available and implicitly referenced in dispersed fashion among existing bibliographical works on German exile literature as a whole. One hundred and one individuals are represented. Criteria for inclusion were that the individuals were born before 1918 in Germany or the Austro-Hungarian empire, and that they wrote or illustrated children’s literature from 1933 to 1950 in countries to which they emigrated as a result of racial or political persecution by the Nazis. The articles include biographical information and a listing of works as well as published excerpts and translations. Although Phillips occasionally includes a brief content note, her work is not intended to include critical evaluations of the literature. Reports on both non-fiction and fiction. Location of a holding library for each title is included. Pen names and name changes, as well as birth names, are indicated in the articles and cross referenced within the name index.
