Description: Join us for a real-time activity with three of the top GPTs available: Open AI’s Chat GPT 4.o, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude. We shall run tests to see if the AI ChatBots can propose items for collection and discuss the implications of using AI for collection development. We will also discuss the growing trend of online sellers with mislabeled first editions, reused ISBNs, and unauthentic book jackets. How do you navigate these issues, and where do you find reliable sources for rare books? And finally, we will share our experiences and approaches to dealing with Faculty Retirees and their desire to donate their collections.

Join LES at ALA Annual 2024!

LES will be co-sponsoring a great session at ALA Annual with the RUSA History Section, and we’d love for you to join us if you’ll be in San Diego!

Marked for Death? Challenges to the Humanities and Humanities Librarianship will be presented on Saturday, June 29 from 4—5pm at the San Diego Convention Center. Co-sponsored by ACRL LES and the RUSA History Section, the program will feature panelists Jennifer Hofer, History Librarian at the University of Florida; Nancy Kranich, Teaching Professor at Rutgers University; Ethan Lindsay, Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian at Wichita State University; and Laura Semrau, Humanities Librarian at Baylor University. The panelists will engage in a conversation about the turn towards AI and quantitative studies, shrinking attention spans, and growing economic anxieties among students and how libraries and humanities librarians can respond to this real or imagined crisis.

LES Anti-Racist Action Plan Town Hall

The Literatures in English (LES) Anti-Racist Action Plan Ad Hoc Committee is hosting a town hall to share the committee’s work thus far and to hear your comments and suggestions. Our goal is to assess and improve the operation of the Section as a first step toward anti-racist practice. At this town hall we will be sharing the committee’s charge, draft report and explaining the process thus far, examining: 

  • Publications
  • Marketing
  • Volunteer recruitment
  • Programming
  • Governing documents
  • Nominations
  • Inclusive meeting practices 

We are seeking feedback from library workers across all subject fields, areas of expertise, and types of libraries, whether or not you are members of LES, ALA, or ACRL.

Description: The LES Working Group to Update the LES Research Competencies has been working on a document to update the existing competencies within the new ACRL Information Literacy Framework. During this webinar, the working group will provide an update on the status of the Research Competencies in Writing and Literature document, highlighting how the document can be used to enhance teaching and outreach efforts in your liaison areas.

Your feedback on the document is needed! During the webinar, there will be opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ideas in small group settings on these key topics:

• Relevance to your own teaching and assessment efforts
• Interdisciplinary applications
• Usefulness in curriculum design and creating learning objectives
