Hearing Voices: Collecting Residents’ Oral Histories
As part of ALA’s Emerging Leaders Program, a fantastic work group tackled a project for the Residency Interest Group. The work group was comprised of the following Emerging Leaders:
- Kenya Flash, Political Science, Global Affairs, and Government Information Librarian, Yale University
- Ashleigh Coren, Special Collection Librarian for Teaching and Learning, University of Maryland, College Park
- Joanna Chen Cham, Lead for Emerging Literacies Librarian, UCLA
- Hailley Fargo, Student Engagement Librarian, Penn State University, University Park
The project for RIG focused on how to begin collecting oral histories from former library residents and had these outcomes:
- Investigate and recommend a process for collection oral histories
- Create a toolbox with documentation on how to collect, preserve, and promote oral histories
- Consider technical, ethical, and legal issues
You can find more information about their project and findings in the documents linked below.
